An isolator is an enclosed and confined environment whose function is to provide a threefold level of protection to the operator, the product and the environment during a range of operations.

In the process of micronization of pharmaceutical powders (and beyond), isolators are essential because they allow easy handling and viewing of the work in an enclosed and separate environment. They are usually made of stainless steel, welded by the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) method, and in some cases the transparent acrylic parts are replaced by tempered glass or other materials to provide a higher degree of safety for the operator.
